Chinese Broccoli (Gai Lan) is a classic dish found in many Chinese households and restaurants. With its tender stems and flavourful garlic-soy sauce glaze, this vegetable dish is simple yet packed with deep, savoury flavour.

Whether you blanch the stems first or sauté them directly in a wok, it’s quick to make and pairs perfectly with rice, noodles, or as a side to stir-fries and grilled meats.

Gai Lan is a versatile vegetable that’s not only delicious but also loaded with nutrients. It’s the perfect way to add some green to your meal without compromising on flavour.

Chinese Broccoli (Gai Lan)

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch of Chinese broccoli (Gai Lan), washed and trimmed

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or sesame oil for extra flavour)

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional, but highly recommended)

  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance flavours)

  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil (optional, for added depth)

  • 1 tablespoon water

  • Pinch of salt (to taste)

  • Toasted sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Directions

  1. Prepare the Broccoli: Wash the Chinese broccoli thoroughly and trim the stems. If the stems are thick, you can slice them vertically to make them cook faster. Set aside.

  2. Blanch the Broccoli (Optional): In a large pot of boiling water, blanch the Chinese broccoli for about 2-3 minutes until the stems are tender but still vibrant green. Drain and set aside. Alternatively, you can skip blanching and stir-fry directly.

  3. Cook the Garlic: Heat the vegetable oil (or sesame oil) in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

  4. Stir-Fry the Broccoli: Add the Chinese broccoli to the pan, followed by the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, sesame oil (if using), and water. Stir well to combine. Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the broccoli is tender and the sauce has slightly thickened.

  5. Serve: Remove from heat, and transfer to a serving plate. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately as a side dish with steamed rice or as part of a larger meal.
